This conversation will focus on the way male entitlement works in tandem with misogyny, himpathy, and other op¬pressive systems to produce unjust, perverse, and sometimes bi¬zarre outcomes. Manne’s analysis of our current culture – spanning Harvey Weinstein, Kristen Roupenian’s story “Cat Person,” the gross injustices Black women face in the medical system, anti-trans policing of restroom access, and Elizabeth Warren’s withdrawal from the presidential race – illustrates the extent of male entitlement’s hold on our society.

Using these and other examples, Manne will explore the social or cultural goods that men are presumed entitled to receive – especially from women – and which women are expected to give, but are not necessarily entitled to receive themselves. This imbalance in entitlement undergirds a wide array of misogynistic phenomena: mansplaining, gaslighting, the incel movement and the acts of violence they sometimes perpetrate, and the pervasive notion of the unelectability of women.
